I know this is long overdue. At my showcase many people wanted easy-access to some of the information that was on my posters. It’s buried in this blog, but I figured I’d dedicate an entire post just to what everyone thought was most interesting.

Take a look at your body:
- The length of your foot is the same as the length of your forearm; between your wrist and elbow.
- The distance from your navel to knee is the same as the distance from your knee to the tip of your toes.
- The distance from fingertip to wrist is the same as the distance from wrist to elbow.
- The distance from fingertip to elbow is the same as the distance from ankle to knee.
- Your wingspan is the same length as your height.

Phyllotaxy is the arrangements of leaves and flowers on a plant stem.

Spiral phyllotaxy is one of the main types and is caused by the accumulation of the plant hormone auxin in sequence 137.5 degrees away from the last accumulation site on the meristem. This is the Fibonacci sequence. (Correct me if I’m wrong. This is from a lecture by Mark Estelle, UCSD Professor, on 2/21/12)

In plants, new cells develop with the presence of sunlight, this arrangement of leaves allows sunlight to reach the plant at the base, the old leaves never obscuring the light needed for photosynthesis and plant creation. Iris and lilies have three petals. Some lilies have 2 sets of 3 or 6 petals. Buttercups, wild roses and larkspur, columbine have 5, eight for delphiniums and all the way to the asteracea family members, Michaelmas daisies with 89 petals.
